Blog #2

"Fear, ultimately, is the reason I have survived" (Gomez, 61).

This has been one of my favorite readings from this class so far. I was able to relate a lot to what Gomez was talking about during his childhood. Fear is a really important motivator, and can help us succeed in many things in life. Most of the readings in my classes have been very dense and dry, but this one actually helped me understand the class concepts more clearly.

Gomez talks about how fear has shaped him, and how he would have never accomplished the things that he has without being afraid of failure. Being a college student, I am constantly afraid of failure. There are a lot of pressures in this environment. I think it is very important for someone to address that it is ok to be scared. It's ok to be scared of failure, the dark, falling in love, and school. Gomez also talks a bit about gender stereotypes and how men are encouraged not to talk about their feelings, or sometimes not even have certain feelings. Gomez touches on many important subjects within this chapter, but these two are the most important. There is so much negativity about fear and gender stereotypes in society. Men and boys should realize that it is okay for them to have feelings, and it is okay for them to talk about it. The fear and genders stereotypes tie into Comm 160 because it relates back to popular culture. Sadly it is 2017 and we are still having to deal with stereotypes, racism, and negativity. It's time for our culture to make a change.
