Hey,
The section of text I found extremely interesting this month was in the Family Bullying reading Keith Berry and Tony E. Adam.
The specific line I enjoyed was in the opening, "Folk wisdom often suggests that families are sacred to persons’ lives. Stories abound about the significance of the family system, what families are and should be, and how family members should interact and feel about each other."
This line is significant because that is how families are portrayed throughout most of society. It is a societal norm to see a family of 4 with a Mom and a Dad, and 2 children. This family is happy going about their normal lives, the parents go to work and the kids go to school. However, behind closed doors something sinister could be happening. Children all around the country are subject to home bullying but it goes unnoticed because of the mask that society has put over our eyes.
Families are that one fundamental cornerstone of life that we know we always have to go back to. If something goes wrong at school, society wants us to believe that you have your family to fall back on. Many people don't have that basic building block of life and it is a shock to most people. Keith Berry in his writings is shocked that some people have experienced family bullying that makes them insecure and harms their self conscience.
If you asked 10 people in our class about how family members should act, all of them would respond with around the same answer. Family members are supposed to support each other and be their for each other in times of need and unfortunately, many people don't have that.
