Reflexivity
The concept I chose was reflexivity. Reflexivity is the process of
thinking about actions. It is deeply thinking about the actions themselves and
what affect they have on the world around us. It is also about how and why we
choose to do the things we do. In communication, reflexivity is used to
personalize what the speaker is relaying to the audience or listener. It also
involves connecting with your audience or listener by listening to them.
Reflexivity could be really useful while driving. The only thing
the driver can control is their own actions. When someone checks their blind
spot, they aren’t just seeing if it is clear, they are thinking about how their
driving will affect others. When a driver uses their blinkers or horns they are
directly communicating. Drivers also
listen to one another when they nonverbally communicate that something is clear
or ok to go.
I think this concept is important because we all communicate from
our own perceptions and often at a quick pace. Reflexivity can slow down the
communication process when it is important to really listen or truly empathize
with a topic. Using reflexivity could make other people more likely to listen
and it could allow a new point of view. If I can only control my actions, then
how and why I do them is important.
