With the new presidency and potential threats to reproductive freedom, Amy Arellanos statement in Word Wielding Womb “losing body parts to platforms” is undoubtedly relevant in today’s hot topics. The new Health Care appeal is putting women all over the nation on edge due to the possibility of them losing their birth control and life choice options. The appeal is also aimed to defund Planned Parenthood which not only provides contraceptive methods but cancer screenings and other general health screenings for the public. CNN states that 99% of sexually active women use at least ONE form of contraceptive in their lifetime to protect against unplanned pregnancy and STI’s. This political attack on reproductive rights is terrorizing the U.S and wreaking havoc on the psyche of our women. Women ARE losing their body parts to political platforms and unfortunately may not have enough power to win the battle. The ban on pro-choice grants women a choice if their pregnancy is “forced” but only if the court decided it was forced on them. Amy’s statement “redefining rape in our living rooms” smacked me in the face when I read it, once again hitting the healthcare appeal right on the head. How can women feel comfortable knowing their attacks are deemed true or false by people who weren't even there? And if we are fighting abortion rates why are we taking away contraceptives, the only thing that can truly prevent pregnancy other than abstinence in the first place? While this war on reproductive freedom rages on I hope women will continue to fight for their rights and our society will begin to fight with them.
