This
month one of the things that we talked about was racial discrimination in
companies. We read an article about how Coca Cola, specifically, is a
company that this has so many racial discrimination problems. This is an
issue that I did not realize was still so prevalent, especially in such big
companies. I think that this problem is something that is not talked
about very often and because of that there has not been very much action trying
to fix it.
The
article states, "This case explores norms and practices of radical
discrimination at Coca-Cola, which limited the contributions and the pay of
African American employees. According to the case, the hostile work
environment also created unusually high rates of stress-related illnesses, such
as depression, among the employees.”
This quote illustrates a very broad overview of the issue. The article goes on to talk about all of the
different and more specific pars of this problem. Things that go on in these factories is
everything from less pay for African Americans to employers treating them
unfairly simply based on their color.
More
recently this is a problem that has been brought to the courts and people are
starting to file law suits against Coco-Cola for their unfair treatment and
racial discrimination. However because they
are such a big company and they are such a wealthy company they very easily are
able to pay the people who are filing law suits against them and come to some
sort of settlement. The issue that I see
with this is the settlements are never very much for Coca-Cola to pay. It is a lot of money but not for a multi million-dollar
company. These settlements do not effect
the company at all and they are able to continue to treat the employees the way
that they want. No new laws are put into
place and no disciplinary action is ever taken to Coca-Cola and I think that is
a really big problem. Another company that
I found in my research who has dealt with law suits in regards to racial discrimination
is Wal Mart, and again they are able to easily pay of these law suits and
continue to treat employees the way that they see fit.
Racial discrimination in these large companies is something
that I have never thought of being an issue.
It is never in the news and it is not something that we talk about so
for young people or for people who have never heard any of this it comes at
kind of a shock. I come as a shock to me
because I look at racial discrimination in our county as something that is beginning
to be less and less of an issue. Of
course, we still see racial discrimination sometimes but I think our country is
so against allowing that behavior to occur and so it is shocking to hear that
this is something that is still such a prevalent problem within such large companies.
It is so saddening because I believe that we are past that
part in our country’s history and we need to not allow racial discrimination to
continue to exist in the workplace.
