The Importance of Dialogic Performance

“The concept of dialogic performance is important for developing a stance of critical compassionate listening because these are both approaches to creating and maintaining relationships across differences in communication.” (Warren, & Fassett, pg. 70).

I was unaware of dialogic communication until reading about it in class. I see now its import to understand through dialogic communication because it’s where you and the sender are able to exchange your ideas and opinions freely between each other. Building on each other, rather than breaking down one person’s views. Having dialogical communication helps bring together people’s ideas, and values, and allow one another to debate and challenge each other’s views safely.

When trying to perform dialogic communication, it is a balance between four parts which are identity, and difference, detachment and commitment. When listening we want to remove selfish reasons, and ignoring differences, these two things can take you away from dialogical performance because you are no longer listening to what is really being said. You need to accept different views, and allow yourself to be engaging, even though you are not fully aware of the alternative viewpoints.

If we can remove our differences and allow each other to work together while not shutting out others views, we can become a more effective team. From an article by Duque talks about how this approach gives multi-voices and co-construction towards a view or concept. Dialogic works towards helping in language, history, and cultural context, it brings out social awareness. We can see ideas, values, and beliefs of others which is important. Having new understandings of ideas can help with future growth. Everyone has different views, and being able to understand them is import, we need to be open and see what else is out there so that we can prevent issues, or situations that cause harm.
